The Saints Need To Fire Dennis Allen Immediately

Following the 2021 New Orleans Saints season, Head Coach Sean Payton announced his resignation from the team. Following his decision, the team was left with a choice on who to hire as Payton’s successor. After several interviews, the Saints ultimately decided to stay within the team and hire former defensive coordinator Dennis Allen as the team’s next head coach.

Fast forward to the conclusion of week 14 of the NFL Season, it’s time for the Saints to make a change. On paper, the Saints look like a team that could make a legitimate Super Bowl run. However, poor coaching and bad play calling have left the team with an atrocious 4-9 record and last place in the NFC South Division. While I’m all for giving someone a chance, I believe now is the time to fire Dennis Allen.

In an interview a few weeks ago, starting quarterback Jameis Winston, who has been sidelined with injury dating back to a few weeks into the season, had told reporters that he was told he wouldn’t lose his job due to injury. Now healthy, he is still playing backup to current starter Andy Dalton. Refusing to start Jameis is one of the main reasons why he should be gone. In a week 13 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Saints held a 16-3 lead with roughly 5 minutes left in the game. Following Mark Ingram’s decision to step out of bounds before the first down marker, a slant route on 3rd & 1, and a crucial drop by Taysom Hill, the Saints ended up falling 17-16.

While it would be hard to find a replacement more than halfway into the season, the Saints have to make a change that teams like the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts made by firing Matt Rhule and Frank Reich.

The Saints go into the bye week at 4-9 before hosting their rival Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, December 18th.
